Almost one and half years after FTC issued the final rules on free credit reports, such reports finally became available nation-wide. People living in the West, Midwest and South already got the taste of these reports months earlier, and starting from today, people living in the East have access too. In order to receive the free annual credit report from the "big three" credit reporting agencies (CRAs): Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, you should access the official website at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/, and follow online instructions. These three agencies each offers a slightly different flavor of the report, so you might want to take a look at PFBlog's step-by-step guide for each CRA:

• TransUnion
Now that identity theft is commonplace, you can never understate the importance of checking your own credit information regularly. Since you are entitled to three free report (one from each CRA) a year, one strategy may be to pull a report every four months. Good luck!

The Transunion guys set a very very high bar to get the free report -- you have to have the full 16 digits of an old credit card. I've used the same card for 8 years and didn't have any older ones, so I was out of luck. The other two credit reports from the other agencies were easier to access, thankfully. I spoke to the media manager over at Experian who mentioned that they had given out millions of free credit reports.
This must be eating into their bottom line. They're going to have to come up with some other profitable offerings to offset giving away free credit reports.
BTW... The reason I called Experian was to get an statement on how they're going to handle the hurricane katrina disaster victim's credit.
Don Girard mentioned that Experian is teaming up with Equifax and TransUnion to give a unified solution for the victims.
