Our family net worth grew a handsome $21,000, or 1.2%, in September, extending our winning streak of back-to-back five-figure monthly gains to the 6th month. For the first nine months of the year, we have grown our total assets by over $177K, besting the $146K gain in the same period last year.
Our household balance sheet, along with monthly, year-to-date, and trailing 12 months comparison, are shown below:
Our favorable results this month is mostly benefitted from the annual bonus I received from my day job. After paying for taxes associated with the bonus, we saved over $20,000 from our job income.
The performance of our investment portfolio is a mixed bag. Our investment in the US market retreated about $9,000 in the month, largely in line with the market performance. On the other hand, our investment in China delivered another solid month with over $10,000 appreciation from both our P2P loans and a couple of stock picks. (As a side note, we also initiated a $10K position in the two leading US P2P loan marketplaces, LendingClub and Prosper. Likely we will expand this position to $50K by the end of the year as a hedge against limited opportunities in the equity market.)
The USD/CNY foreign exchange factor, which had sizeable impact on our monthly tally in both directions almost every month since the beginning of the year, only dealt a small $700 positive to our bottom line.
All in all, we had another solid month in September. As we are entering the last quarter of the year, I'm not sure we can continue this five-figure growth every month, but I'm hopeful we can end the year in a positive note with our net worth in new heights.
