Nice and Easy with Geico

Contributed by mm | July 13, 2005 8:33 AM PST

No, I'm not a Geico customer; I was just read-ended by another who is insured by Geico. It is unfortunate, but my dealing with Geico in the last few days has been satisfactory.

The accident happened in my morning commute. The damage to my rear bumper was actually minor -- only a couple of scratches, so I exchanged insurance information with the other driver.

About three hours after the accident, before I had time finishing all emails piled up in my mailbox throughout the night, Geico called me. I was told the other driver had reported the accident and claimed the responsibility. The Geico representative asked me a few questions regarding the accident, and set up an appointment so I can take my car to a local collision center to assess the damage.

So, on a sunny afternoon yesterday, I drove to the Geico-affiliated collision center. An adjuster looked at my rear bumper, took some digital photos, went back to office to prepare some documents, and cut me a check of more than $600. I was told Geico will also take responsibilities if additional damage is found when body shop is processing my vehicle.

Needless to say, I am extremely satisfied with Geico's service. Both people I dealt with are friendly, courteous and professional, and the fact that it only took a visit of 30 minutes (plus driving time) to get the money really underscores the efficiency of the company.

My current insurer is Safeco, and I was unsuccessful getting a favorable rate from Geico. Anticipating a huge move in a few months, I am not in mood to do comparison shopping again, but maybe it's time to load some Berkshire Hathaway stock?

I'm sure your experience with Geico was good but I'm not convinced that they offer a good value. I have received two quotes from them in the past 6 years. Both of which were about double the premium I currently pay. For all their hype, it's just that - hype. I do business with USAA Federal Savings Bank in San Antonio and if you qualify, I highly recommend their services.

It wasn't the BMW that was in the crash, was it?????

FMF: Gladly it's the Camry.

mm, I use Geico for my auto insurance and have had the best deals from them since I switched from Progressive. Plus, you get an extra 8% discount (yet still doesn't beat your current insurance) if you own shares of Berkshire Hathaway. So if you're thinking of loading up on BRK-A/B (whichever fits your budget) this is probably a good time to do so. Geico also offers home insurance. I don't know how their rates are compared to other insurers in that arena. But I wonder if you could save more by taking the minimum required coverage plus an umbrella insurance.

How did you get the 8% discount? It is worth owning shares of Berkshire given my current outrageous premium. Plus Buffet had great performance records.

If you are living in a state insurance premium over the roof, such as NJ, NYC, MD, it's way cheaper to pay small damage your own (without getting a collision record). similar to home insurance. I learned it hard way, still paying for it everyday

I called Geico for a quote and was told I didn't qualify. My credit rating and driving records are spotless. I believe it is all hype too, and have better premiums with AAA. BP

I was also on the receiving end of a Geico-insured driver's vehicle, with about $3500 in damage. My experience with Geico wasn't nearly as good; I ended up waiting over an hour at the local affiliated auto body shop, and in the end was stood up by the Geico agent. Fortunately it was all resolved in the end, but it really didn't leave me with a good impression of Geico.
