A Week's Worth At PFBlog Network #19

Contributed by mm | August 8, 2005 2:12 PM PST

If you just start to manage your personal finance, PFBlog is your great resource. During the weekend, our community is analyzing a young reader's financial plan and throwing out tons of suggestions. Feel the warmth at our post of the week, "Can you Help Jay?"

Now, don't miss the cream of last week's personal finance news, tips and stories:

Bloggers' Personal Stories

• Flexo gave a full disclosure of his income streams thru the blog and why readers should be cautious when reading promotional articles. (Related: Ground Rules of PFBlog.com, Let's Talk About Ads)
• Monthly tallying time again? MM had a great one.
• 1stMill figured out that his portfolio underperformed, with some valid reasons.

Personal Finance News and Resources

• Everyone at PFBlog Network is talking about 401(k). And MM's trying to make sense of the addition of lifecycle funds to his company's 401(k) program.
• Is it technical bubble again? Arbee thinks the hottest stock Baidu.com is way overvalued.
• Flexo received a $75 surprise from New Jersey's 2004 FAIR Tenant Rebate Program.
• Is it time to quit your job? Examine these signs and follow your heart.
• What's the maximum social security benefits? Read 1stMill's study.
State sales tax holidays can save you some money! (And why tax holiday may not be a good public policy.)
• Love to think of the stock market as a huge math puzzle. A good summary of golden ratio and how it relates to the market.
• Want to read personal finance blogs with a female touch? JLP compiled a list of women personal finance bloggers.

Personal Finance Tips

• A great collection of free internet resources. (Thank you Jim!)
• If you don't go the DIY path, choosing a financial advisor may be the most important decision in your financial life. FMF gave out some time tested rules.
• Here are a few things that a would-be homeowner should know.
• Does a multiple-year wheel alignment package make sense?
Some random observations from MM's recent vacation.
• Some good check writing tips!

This is a great website. I've thoroughly enjoyed it since finding it at Kiplinger's a few months ago. Congrats!

I like how you recently opened up the Jay email for feedback. I'd love for you to do that more often. For example, maybe you could solicit open reviews on online investment advisors (like Morningstar's empower), saving for college, personal finance reviews (I'm going to submit some comments on your Microsoft Money review), etc. In general, you have created a great community here. I think it's great that you're starting to leverage the readers more.
