Comparison Shopping: People Magazine Subscription

Contributed by mm | November 19, 2003 12:12 PM PST

My wife asked me to get a subscription of People magazine. I'm long aware of the fact that the price of a subscription to the same magazine can differ significantly between different channels. It's no exception in this case:

My first stop is People.com, the official site of the magazine. I got a deal of $2.19 for 26 issues. It offers risk-free trial of 8 issues if you pay by credit card.

Then I went to Amazon.com, the deal is the same: $2.19 for 26 issues.

The same $2.19 price appears at Magazines.com too. I'm almost dishearted.

At NetMagazines.com, the price tag is $129 for 52 issues, or $2.48 per issue.

I went to some other sites, like OverStock.com (my favorite book site), buy.com and maghall.com: they don't even offer People for subscription.

It seems People magazine has pretty good control over the channel and price. Am I out of wit? Not yet. I turn to Upromise.com (story). Bingo! It offers 30% cash back on Magazines.com. So, I essentially cut down my cost per issue to $1.53.

So in total I saved $57 * 30% = $17.10 with around 15 minutes of research. Not a bad deal at all!
