Jim Cramer's Mad Money - Week of May 30 - June 3, 2005

Following Theta Bowden's excellent comment on searchability of past shows I'm going to begin posting the show summaries by week and month in addition to the daily summaries. This should make it much easier for you to search for and track Cramer's comments on a stock over time. The format is pretty sloppy now but that may improve soon. Also, don't forget that although Google isn't perfect it does allow for site searches. For instance, the query "goog site:www.pfblog.com/reasoned" returns 7 instances where GOOG has been mentioned.

Jim Cramer's Mad Money - June 3, 2005

It was a miserable day, Slow Jobs Growth, Higher Oil.
Were not in nirvana anymore are we? Miserable day but it didnt have to be this way. You could have been selling into strength and buying the stuff that does well when the economy is in the soft patch. When you have a stalled economy you buy health care. You buy UNH. You buy the small and intermediate sized oils, XEC, HAL. Or you buy stuff that has the cycle, BA. Or you go into aisle 4 and aisle 7, how about the cereal stocks? GIS, K. You gotta know this downturn means to buys the PEP, GIS, UNH, ECA, CI you buy the stuff that doesnt need the economy to rock.

Q: Does todays report make MAN a buy?
A: No. At this particular stage you should NOT be buying the temporary employment companies. I urge you to think specialty health care. It is better to own a small health care cost containment company that anything having to do with employment.

Q: Should I sell retail stocks and move into oil stocks?
A: I sold my URBN a couple of weeks ago because we are in nose bleed territory. The conclusion should not be to go into XOM, CVX, BP, RD those have had their day. We are in the eighth inning with oils. Those that will still work are the medium sized oils BBG, XEC, these make sense to me. I need you to take profits in the major oils. The bottom line: I still like oil but I dont have that love affair going on anymore.

Q: Give us your opinion on the pharmaceuticals
A: I dont like to buy stocks with no growth that have dividends. I like to buy stocks that have dividends with growth. With MRK, I dont see a lot of growth there. I happen to like WYE, PFE, SGP. But, I dont see those companies doing as well as DNA. I want to caution you that while I think that PFE can go higher, I think that the big gains will not be in old pharma but will be in biotech DNA, GILD, GENZ, and in the health care cost containment companies UNH is special to me as its not expensive and has more growth. The economy right now is too cold for most of the stocks that I follow. What I need you to do is focus on whats in the supermarket. PEP, UNH, GIS. I dont want you to have that economic sensitivity. If you still have it I think youll be in the house of pain.

When I think Whole Foods (WFMI) I think Google (GOOG).
They are expensive stocks that really might be cheap. When they are put on sale I really notice. The analyst was right to downgrade WFMI because it had reached his price. This is authentic Wall Street gibberish. If you get sucked into that youre going to sell the SHLD at 60, the GOOG at 100 and youre gonna give up on WFMI. Here is what you do. One mans downgrade is another mans feast. Maybe you buy 25 shares here if you want to end up owning 100. What you need to do is be able to say ALL ABOARD when someone downgrades a high quality stock. You dont need to run from it, you walk to it. Just like GOOG down 7, WFMI down 5 that should be a bell going off saying Ive been waiting to get into that for a while, Ive been waiting for a sale. If every time a major department store threw a sale do you think thats because everything got ripped and has moths? No. Nobody ever made a dime panicking. I want you to do a little bit of buying and let it come to you at your prices. BULL.

Q: Is HANS a cheaper way to take advantage of WFMI?
A: We like to buy the actual play, not the derivative play here. Greenberg is worried about Clearly Canadian. At one time they were the hottest drink company in the world and it crashed and burned. Greenberg doesnt want you to crash and burn. Hell say I saw that movie before and it ends badly. Ill say I saw that movie before and the middle is great and I leave right after it.

Q: Is it possible that WFMI is riding on a dietary fad?
A: I think that people want to eat healthy and they feel, correctly that the big supermarkets dont protect them from unhealthy foods. People feel like Whole Foods protects them. Thats a good housekeeping seal of approval that you dont have to pay much for and that stock can go up 20% in revenues for the next 5 years before they start bumping into each other.

MAD MONEY MAIL - MAILBAG:

Q: Should I get back into SHLD?
A: Eddie Lampert is turning around SHLD. I own stock in it, up $100 and I dont care. We need to care more about where its going then where it came from. Buy one share and buy more when it comes in.

Q: Gotta call a personal foul on the 50% off club:
A: What I said is that I need you to get involved in the market and this might be the way. I wasnt breaking my discipline to say that history matters more than the future. MOT is a very inexpensive stock/

Q: What is an acceptable percent that margin should represent?
A: ZERO. We dont borrow money to buy stocks, just homes.

David Jaffe, President and CEO of Dress Barn (DBRN) joins Cramer:

Q: Any possibility you can raise your margins?
A: We certainly see an opportunity to increase our margins.

Q: Tell us about Maurices, which you acquired:
A: Based in the Midwest, have nearly 500 stores. Appeal to 17-34 year old demo, which is slightly different than Dress Barn. They are also willing to go into small markets and become a fashion destination.

Q: Whats the campaign for fall marketing?
A: Were trying to give the customer great, current fashions that fit her lifestyle. This is not the old Dress Barn that may have had things that looked a little dowdy. This has merchandise that is current and at prices that you cant get at department stores.

Cramers Summary: I missed CHS and BEBE. This Dress Barn is a very inexpensive stock. BULL I think Jaffe knows what hes doing. This could be the next thing and you will not regret taking a good look at it, do the homework. Id pull the trigger if I were you.

Not all resignations are a big deal:
The Morgan Stanley resignations today are meaningless.

COGN, MSTR, BOBJ I think there is more pain ahead for these.
Im worried about software, SEBL worries me, Oracle (ORCL) worries me. I think CA could be struggling here too. Extrapolate the COGN by saying that MSTR and BOBJ are not for me.

Disclaimer: I AM NOT JIM CRAMER. I sometimes write the summary in first person because my brain doesn't quite move fast enough to process and type at the same time, so please excuse that. Jim Cramer's Mad Money - June 2, 2005

Why does everyone love $2 Stocks?

This week and next are the weeks where every little piece of garbage starts moving and running and you gotta feel like holy cow, the race is on.

Gary Smith, CEO of Ciena (CIEN) joins Cramer:

Cramers Summary: First I want you to understand that $2 stocks are different animals. They didnt get to $2 because they want to be there. Ciena I think is too HIGH. I think it convinced no one today that the gap of profitability is about to be closed. $2 stocks like Ciena are guilty until proven innocent; Im not ready yet to pull the trigger.

Bottom line on $2 stocks: I dont like these stocks. They are foolish; for the most part you are going to lose money. They are the jokers of the hand and so few times do the jokers ever turn wild.

Major buying opportunity ahead!

PG, G, KMB, AVP, CL If you are like me, always eyeing these best of breed names, you want to wait until the day when you hear the Kernan team saying they are cutting numbers. What I always like to do is not be in the stocks and then wait for that moment and get into the best of breeds cheaper. I think the numbers are too high for these. They all have huge exposure to overseas markets. Colgate, 72% of sales came from outside the U.S. Avon 71%, Gillette 62%, Proctor and Gamble 54%, Kimberly Clark 43%. The dollar has been on a romp and has been so steep so quickly that I think all of these companies sales could be fractionally lower than everyones thinking. If you own them now and cant handle CNBC breaking a story with this information then ring the register. If you are like me though you want to build positions in these names as the numbers come down, wait four weeks until numbers cuts. I think its going to happen over the next three weeks. I believe the estimates could be too high unless the dollar dives which I dont think is gonna happen.

Q: With strengthening dollar do interest rate stocks make sense here?

A: When the dollar gets strong we are willing to overlook a lot of what goes wrong. When you are lending out in weak dollars and being paid back in strong dollars thats the play. I like Citigroup (C), Bank of America (BAC) and JP Morgan (JPM) as strong dollar plays.

BEATING THE RACKET: Cramer talks with Herb Greenberg of Herb Greenbergs RealityCheck

Greenberg: With HANS you avoided losing money in a stock that could have potential problems.

Greenberg: CVS went from a YELLOW FLAG to a RED FLAG on my watch list. It has rising profit and falling cash flow. They are turning around, trying to make money by cutting costs. Comp store sales are still single mid digits. It has a history under somewhat different management of playing some games. LIFO, FIFO. Everyone else in the industry accounts for inventory differently than they do. They dont return my calls and dont like me.

Cramer: It reminds me of AZO, AutoZone. AZO, HANS, CVS I come up with stocks that make people a lot of money.

Greenberg: AZO is getting their cash flow partly from debt. You and I disagree on this. Stocks and businesses are two different things. I do believe, for no other reason than it makes sense that youll see the Sears Auto Center renamed AutoZone.

Cramer: Hallelujah!

Greenberg: Washington Post bought back no stock last year.

Cramer: HANS, I understand the yellow flag. CVS, okay. AZO that one is for me.

I like companies that Under Promise and Over Deliver

Wal-Mart (WMT) constantly forecasts high and then drops the bomb.
SBC Communications (SBC) announced buyback very high and then announces an equity offering at the low. If you own SBC I think you should sell it.

In eight days we find out the stocks thatll be included in the rebalanced Russell 2000 Its a game Ive tried to play multiple times, dont be convinced by your broker to try it.

Jim Cramer's Mad Money - June 1, 2005

Not everyday is nirvana. But today it was.

Getting to Nirvana:
1) It takes time, 8 rate hikes
2) 80 to 20 mph > > Soft Landing
3) High Octane Fuel But No Inflation
4) Need Generals Stocks that are completely in a bullish pattern and dont want to quit

Cramers Six Five Star Generals:

  1. Google (GOOG) If it were a 29 stock that I told you was going to 35 youd say yeah get me into it. But because its 290 and I say its going to 350 you get nervous and worried. Stop it with that. 1999 had to do with taking up stocks that were going up for no reason. That is over worth. This stock is a 290 stock that is going to earn 7 dollars a share and should get a 50 multiple.

  2. Genentech (DNA) This stock would be clocked for speeding its going so fast. I think DNA is trying to get to 100 and is not slowing down.

  3. Toll Brothers (TOL) Hard to believe that this could be a General but now its one of the great performers of the era, shows no signs of slowing down and still only sells at 11 times earnings. Dont forget its a land bank in a country where land is still very cheap versus other countries.

  4. Intel (INTC) I know what youre thinking; its all the way up from 18. You know this sucker is down big from where it used to be. Its clearly breaking out in anticipation of something good. The summer used to be a terrible time to own Intel. It used to be Intel in May, Go Away. Nope. I think the better period is coming ahead three months ago.

  5. United Health (UNH) Get sick of me talking about it when you own the darned thing and its gone up a bit, until then you have no right to be sick of me talking about it. Still has a very low multiple, fantastic balance sheet, increased dividend and dont forget it owns the Medicaid plan. Seven months from now, Medicaid, thats right, and this is the one to go.

  6. Citigroup (C) This is a company that has now paid about 3 billion in fines and fees to just about everybody but how can this situation not get better. Company came out this morning and said business is not good and the stock still went up. Isnt that the General? Taking fire but not blinking?

Bottom line: You need to be in the Generals.

It is hard to find good quality stocks, I want to cherish them and sell them but I dont want to sell them. The toughest thing for me at this very moment is thinking you are a sucker getting in now. Thats where weve got the 50% off club.

50% Off Club: This is a group worth embracing.
Ive always felt its so difficult to pull the trigger after a big run that you need help and a little push. You need to know you arent paying the high.

  1. Corning (GLW) is Down 86% from its all time high. Are you really catching the top here?

  2. Motorola (MOT) Down 67% from its all time high. Multiple revisions up in earnings. I like that

  3. EMC Corp (EMC) Down 86% from its all time high. Kicking IBMs butt growing software and services. Maybe it should have never been that high but should it stay this low? No.

  4. Broadcom (BRCM) Down 87% from high of 275. Never lost its communications chip lead.

  5. Yahoo (YHOO) Still of 68% from its high.

We all know these highs probably shouldnt have occurred but when I look at these I think you arent paying top dollar yet, except maybe the Google. When you buy the 50% Off Club you know that the bottom line is that you arent getting in at the top, no way no how.

Beat The Racket: Best Buy (BBY)

Retail is SO right. How do I be sure I dont own the HOTT of the retailers? How do I know I own the Best of Breed? For the longest time my favorite hard good retailer was Best Buy (BBY). I wanted to get off the ship though because my friend, Matt Fassler, the Goldman Sachs Retail Analyst, downgraded the stock.

Cramer: When you downgraded Best Buy you had long term secular concerns.

Fassler: The biggest change from then till now is that management has changed its tune on how its coming at the music business. Back in January and February the company line was that they had a number of years to gradually manage the decline in store based music. The companys experience in the fourth quarter led them to come to terms with the fact that music is going to be declining farther and faster. Theyve made a couple of changes: Taking square footage away from music and gradually devoting it to video games and DVDs and working on their specific assortments of music. Managements treatment of that reality has changed.

Cramer: We were also concerned with virtual fire sales going on at competitor stores. Have those concerns lessened?

Fassler: The magnitude of promotional activity has flattened out.

Cramer: How do we play the hardware revolution in games?

Fassler: Best buy does a great job merchandising video games. In many newer stores you can sit and play the games. Nice game cycle coming in that space.

Cramer Summary: Best Buy BULL. One of the things that should take your breath away is that when you buy best of breed you adjust. They lessened the music, they changed, adapted and are flexible. The problems with Radio Shack and Circuit City are behind them. Fasslers right: IM A BUYER OF BBY.

SBC cut the prices of DSL access.

SBCs Ed Whitaker is one of those guys who takes no prisoners. Whenever he takes an action its usually because he just found out something good thats going to happen to a cable company. My take is that you take the other side of the trade. Id buy Comcast here. I see the possibility of a deal between a major cable company and a major cell phone provider for one price one phone number, one high speed cable modem line and that is what I think Whitaker was trying to get ahead of at SBC. Now, what happens here: Day one we have the Whitaker thing. Day two nothing, thats tomorrow. I think by Friday we hear exciting news by some cable company and some cell phone company that makes you want to own Comcast. Bottom line: Why wait? Comcast is being knocked down, take advantage.

AM I DIVERSIFIED?

Diversification is the only free lunch in the game my friends.

Portfolio: CTSH, GE, JNJ, MDT, NAT
Am I diversified?: No. GE, no problem. NAT, not a fan but I like the dividend. Problem is that JNJ and MDT leave you hostage to the stent and medical device business. Why not swap MDT out for Citigroup (C)?

Portfolio: GLW, MOT, INTC, TWX, DYN
Am I diversified?: No how no way. You are so deep in technology you put me in the way back machine to 1999. GLW and MOT are very much together. Layer on INTC and youre diversification is TX and DYN a little four dollar. If I were you Id swap GLW or MOT, Id prefer GLW and get into a bank, maybe a health care company.

Portfolio: HCA, USB, WMT, HD, AN
Am I Diversified?: No. This is a tough one. HCA, ok with me. USB, not my favorite but diversified with a nice dividend. Then three retailers. Id let go of the WMT. Think you should be in a diversified conglomerate and a defense company. Sell the WMT, sell the AN.

Cramer talks with Ara Hovnanian, CEO Hovnanian Enterprises (HOV):

Quarter missed the high estimate and therefore sent the stock down. Is this a buying opportunity given how hot the homebuilders are?

Cramer: When I look at what you reported, other than your tax rate, there really wasnt anything that was too disappointing. Am I too pro homebuilder?

Hovnanian: I dont think so. Our net income eps is up 53%. We beat consensus, perhaps not the highest person in the estimate. Frankly, Im thrilled with it. We raised our projections once again as weve done quarter after quarter for years now.

Cramer: UBS says this shortfall unit closings fell below our expectations in part due to weather delays. Does this guy know what hes talking about?

Hovnanian: The weather, particularly, the winter weather in California, the whole west coast, Arizona, was quite bad with a lot of precipitation, 100 year record levels. This had an impact on land development as without the streets being in, water, sewer, curbs, sidewalk, you cant build the houses or begin to build the houses.

Cramer: Makes sense. Do you have a lot of land banked that you can build homes on?

Hovnanian: We have a significant land position. We use a lot of options is buying land, which we like. About 25% of the lots we control and we control about 100,000 lots and the other 75% we have options on. We are particularly strong in the Northeast and New Jersey, also the D.C. market which has been very strong as well.

Cramer: To me this stock, down a buck is a mistake. If you like the housing group you just got a chance to buy it cheaper than it should be.

Cramer talks with Charlie Kleman, COO and CFO of Chicos FAS (CHS):

Cramer: What is it about you guys that you are able to accelerate your earnings the way you do?

Kleman: Its really number one the product, then the customer service, then the marketing. Thats probably the third reason, the Passport club included, it accounts for over 96% of our sales, thats through the Chicos brand and over 50% in the White House / Black Market brand we acquired about a year and half ago. 29 of the past 32 quarters have been over a 30% increase in Net Income. Thats a long run over 8 years.

Cramer: Where are you in terms of number of states youre in now? How far along are you in the development process?

Kleman: We have about 700 stores now. We believe we can have 600-800 Chicos stores, north of 500 White House Black Market stores and we just launched our intimate apparel line, Soma by Chicos, and we believe that can be everywhere Chicos can be.

Cramer: Wow, means they could double the store count.

Cramer Summary: Heres how I approach this stuff. I have retailers that arent at their 52 week high that I like more than this but heres what you do. Theres always gonna be some sale, in the stock market. Write this one down. At 32 I want you in.

Dont forget the Generals and the 50% Off Club: GOOG, DNA, TOL, INTC, UNH and C. GLW, MOT, EMC, BRCM, YHOO. Got to be something to buy there dont you think?

Jim Cramer's Mad Money - May 31, 2005

This was an ouch day, a lot of things didnt work right.

Rumors came out that were gonna see some incredibly weak macro data which sent all the stocks down. Among the stocks that went down were the casino stocks.

Donald Trump, Trump Entertainment Resorts, Chairman and CEO on the phone:

Cramers Summary: If you believe as I do that this company is worth more than the $350 million dollar market cap, now I understand there is also debt, then I think what you do is wait for the bondholders to blow out of the common stock. Trump said the bondholders are happy, but they got stock and they dont usually own a lot of stock so what happens is they just throw it away. That is your opportunity to buy down on the scale. Do I come right in here and start buying this? No. Its not trading well enough. I do believe that if you can buy a Trump property on the cheap then well BULL. Be careful though please as these after bankruptcy stocks do trade down.

Q: Can Atlantic City become an actual destination potentially competing with Las Vegas over time?

A: This is a question that has bedeviled those who have bought the stocks of the Atlantic City casinos over the years. I think the problem with Trumps Casinos is that they need renovation. The bottom line is that Im not concerned about the Atlantic City component. I am concerned about the bond holders that took the stock for DJTE will kick the stock out and as they do you can buy.

Q: Do you think this is a good entry point to get into gaming stocks with the drop offs in WYNN and LVS?

A: I have not felt that. LVS goes down every day. What Id lpook at in this group is the soon to be closed deal of Harrahs and Caesars. To me the real bell ringer in this group is Caesars when it merges with Harrahs because then you got the best of Vegas with the best of Jersey.

Q: What are the prospects for international growth for domestic gaming stocks?

A: This is what burned people so badly with LVS everyone is focused on Macau. The problem with that is that those people like to fly here, they like Vegas, they dont like their area. International is grossly overdone.

Personal foul on those of you who are buying the DJTE stock right now when I said to wait. You who are taking the stock after I said they could be a good opportunity on the downside

EBAY is back to most favored nation status. There are a couple of good things happening at EBAY. One, I believe the quarter is better than expected. BULL. Two, I think weve got accelerated revenue growth. What ever happened to those people that were complaining about the fee increases? The stock has been in the penalty box long enough that they are hungry for something new. They want to be in the ebay. Enough time has now passed that we traders have forgotten that Meg Whitman was thinking about leaving to DIS. Bottom line: I still want you in EBAY even after the big Goldman conference.

When I talk about trading $270 stocks on this show maybe (PERSONAL FOUL SOUND) is meant for me. Its too hard in this environment. If you want to own Google (GOOG) you have to own it, not trade it. If you want to take some off the table because of the big run its had thats great. Bulls make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered. Thats my takeaway though from the brutal rally, sell off and then rally again after the internet conference last week. I think the next time I tell you to try and thread the needle, send me an email to stop dropping bombs on us. The bottom line is: You like Google, you should have stuck with it and that my friends is right.

Q: How much upside do we have in EBAY when you factor in Paypal and the emerging financial services component?

A: The bull case on EBAY does not rest on Paypal. Everyone and his brother is trying to take them down and they cant. Its still the only auction house in town, including China and Europe. You own it for the core business which has accelerated apparently and throw in Paypal for free.

Q: Where do you really come up with numbers on what you want to own these stocks at? GOOG and EBAY?

A: I am using traditional earnings logic here. I am saying that Google (GOOG) is going to earn $7 / share next year. When we turn the page tomorrow and go to June 1, people are going to be looking at 2006 earnings. You look at what is that $7 worth? If Yahoo (YHOO) sells at 86 times this years earnings and 64 times next years earnings and EBAY sells at 48 times next years, if you are willing to use the relative matrix you have to come up with something between 50 and 60. Lets take the low end, 50. 50 times 7 you get $350 bucks. The bell should be going off in your head if you think this isnt real because you are wrong.

Never liked Amerindo because it chased momentum. Wouldnt it be ironic if tech lead the way now. Hed be buying INTC, EBAY, MRVL, BRCM, GOOG here. Bottom line, this time I would buy high multiple tech. Also TIBX which I think bottomed today. This company down from 15 all the way to 6 and I like it here, if you pay 7 I disavow any knowledge of the trade!

Joseph Nocera, New York Times columnist joins Cramer: Talking about Hedge Funds and momentum Mutual Funds

Nocera: Janus was terrible in the boom. They had a fund that owned only 20 stocks. If they were a hedge fund theyd be out of business. Hedge funds are down about 2% and people are saying they are in trouble and they are right as some of them are in trouble because their investors wont accept losses. They were so narrowly focused with too many managers in the same stocks. People need to have a better understanding of the importance of diversification.

Cramer: The bottom line is, listen up. Dont be in these high flying money managing firms because they can go down and crush you if theyre all in the same stocks.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Remember my rules from my book, Jim Cramers Real Money: Sane Investing in an Insane World. I dont like you speculating when it turns out that the fundamentals are declining. Thats whats happening with MBNA (KRB). How about MXT instead? Here the fundamentals are improving. A $13 stock with business getting better. Dont pay $14, use limit orders. I believe that MXT could get a takeover bid but if it doesnt you wont get hurt by the fundies.

RNT - Aaron Rents, Inc. - Not a big guy in that rent game BEAR - don't like the way they make the money

RL - Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. - BULL - like the stock in this environment.
COH - Coach, Inc. - like it too BULL
ADP - Automatic Data Processing - ALL ABOARD. This stock is so right and is the single biggest beneficiary of the Fed raising rates because it lives off the float on all those paychecks. TWO THUMBS UP.
UNH - UnitedHealth Group Inc. - Buy it. One of the best in show. Last time it split it went of 5% within three weeks.
ISSC - Innovative Solutions & Support - BULL - like LMT, like the group like the stock here

Boeing stock should be bought on any dip because all the stories don't amount to more than a hill of beans
UNH - UnitedHealth Group Inc. - 16 times earnings with a great buyback and balance sheet. You've got to own the stock. BULL
