Of course it is - that's stating the obvious. The money you contribute to a retirement account is what makes it grow - any upward changes in market value is icing on the cake. If I invest $10,000 into a retirement account and expect it to earn a reasonable 8% interest rate, after 5 years, the majority of its value still comes from what you contributed. Right on. One minor tweak: It makes no sense to invest and hope to get 4-12%; and having higher interest debt. Key is to live slightly below your means, and cost average into your retirement account.
