If only the NHL could negotiate our Medical Insurance

I've written of my medical insurance mess, where -- if premiums continue to rise as they have the past two years -- I'll be paying $53K/year before reaching Medicare in 2015.

When it comes to rapidly rising costs, it appears that Im not alone. Over the past decade, salaries for National Hockey League players have risen 300% -- contributing to major losses for team owners. So when contract negotiations came around last year, owners took a stand that included demands for a salary cap. A stand that ultimately scrubbed the 2004-2005 season.

This week, after a 10-month lockout, the National Hockey League and NHL Players Association have finally come to a tentative agreement. And in the end, the owners got their cap. But this I find even more interesting...

Turns out that just prior to canceling the 2004-2005 season, players rejected an offer capping salaries at $42.5 million per team. Now with an entire season down the drain, players must still concede to what works out to be a $40 million cap -- leaving them a few mill short of the first offer. In addition, all existing player contracts will be reduced 24%.

So heres my plan: If government and business leaders cant put a lid on skyrocketing medical costs, I say we turn the entire mess over to NHL owners -- and let them take their best shot! :-)
