How Long Can U.S. Citizens Continue to Consume 6% More Than They Produce?

...during the past five years wealth has come more from finance-based miracles than those based on productivity.

This quote from linked investment commentary by Bill Gross of PIMCO fame. (In 2004, Fortune magazine ranked Bill Gross number ten in their list of The 25 Most Powerful People in Business.)

The article is a bit tough to wade through and digest, but if you are looking for insight into what drives the current economy, as well as what investment opportunities / risks the future may hold, this is a worthwhile read.

Disclosure: I own PIMCO All Asset Institutional fund in my portfolio.

Consider this : hiking short term rates, shores up the Dollar which makes it seem like a more credible reserve currency which attracts investors from countries with trade surpluses, but with less "credible" currencies. That injects more money into the US economy and holds long term rates down.
