Retirement Funding and Debt Relief

I think that conventional wisdom says that you should stop paying into your retirement accounts until you pay down large amounts of debt...or at least credit card and consumer debt. One thing I need to figure out is what happens if we stop paying our minimum 5% into my wife's Fidelity account. That money is pre-tax and her employer matches an additional 6%. If we get taxed on that 5% and put it toward debt, will we really pay down that credit card debt faster, or fast enough to justify the loss of free money? I'm sure some math wizards can give us a quick thought...if you have one.

Sorry it has been a couple of days since my last post...I'll try to stay on top of this. I find that blogging is similar to money management for me. It is easy to get discouraged and not really pay attention to what is going on. I want to be aware at all times...thinking about things like a healthy financial life.

The key here is the interest rate on your credit cards. Unless you are in dire straits I'd say a financially responsible person is probably better off taking the free money you are getting from her employer - at a 100% return. Your CC rates are never going to be that high.
