Could GEICO Save Me 15%? I May Never Know

I hear ads all the time for GEICO on the radio and the web constantly. GEICO is a direct to consumer car insurance company that says it can save the typical customer

15% on their car insurance. Unfortunately GEICO does not do business in my state - so I can't get a quote from them to find out.

GEICO stands for Government Employees Insurance Company - It was founded decades ago and originally sold insurance to Federal mployees (but now they sell to the general public). Warren Buffett liked the idea so much he bought the company and for a while now GEICO has been a division of Berkshire Hathaway.

Since GEICO eliminates the middleman they have lower costs. And those lower costs get passed along to the customer.

Saving 15% on car insurance would be well over $100/year for a typical driver (and maybe a lot more for someone with an expensive car). Over the course of a decades long driving career the savings could pile up quite nicely.

Of course I may never find out. But you probably can.
