The New 'Forever' Stamp

The US Postal Service is back at it again... Just a few months after raising stamp prices, their talking about doing it again. This time, however, there's a twist...

Yesterday, the USPS announced their desire to raise stamp prices by three cents next year, bringing a first class stamp to 42 cents. But these stamps would be good forever, no matter what happens to prices in the future. That's right:

Customers would be able to purchase a special First-Class stamp which would be good for any future single-piece First Class letter mailing, no matter how prices might change beyond 2007.

This would mean an end to those odd little two or three cent stamps that are used to 'round up' an old stamp to the current price. So... If they go ahead with this, will you stock up on stamps? While there's really no need to do so until they announce the next price increase (i.e., after the 'forever' stamps are introduced), you could save yourself a few bucks by building up a stockpile. As for me, I probably wouldn't do much beyond replenishing our usual stamp supply prior to the price hike. Doing anything more than that just isn't worth the added effort (or the risk of losing a huge stash of stamps).

Hoarding stamps is a losing proposition, because you earn no more than the rate of inflation. Better to buy the much-maligned inflation-indexed I-Bond, and earn 1% *above* the rate of inflation. Over time, in fact, non-rare stamps sell for *less* than face value (search for discounted postage in a search engine).

Nondenominated British stamps have always been redeemable forever for the listed service class. It's about time we followed suit.
