ETFs in Europe

WSJ has a good overview of European ETF market.

From WSJ:

Although Europe remains a much smaller ETF market than the U.S., money managers say its friendlier regulatory audience has created a situation where a number of ETF concepts make a debut there and appear in the U.S. only later on.

Among the ETF strategies that have migrated across the pond: leveraged funds, oil and gold.

Those available overseas but still not in the U.S. include active management, capital-protection funds, and more commodities like aluminum and wheat.

ETFs resemble index-oriented mutual funds but trade on an exchange like a stock.

The funds began trading in Europe around 2000 -- long after the Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts, or Spider, often regarded as the prototypical ETF, hit the U.S. market in 1993.

Today, European ETF assets total about $76.1 billion, a fraction of the $358.3 billion in U.S. ETFs, according to State Street Corp.'s State Street Global Advisors.
