Microsoft To Broadcast Concerts Online

Nice run of MSFT lately, but it is still a long way to go to chip away Google's huge first-mover advantage.

From WSJ:

Microsoft Corp. signed an agreement to broadcast live-music events on the Internet with a music-broadcast producer, as part of its effort to increase the advertising on its MSN Web service.

The Redmond, Wash., software maker said it signed a deal with closely held Control Room, a music-broadcast producer in Los Angeles, to produce 36 live-music events for the Internet. The first production will be a performance early next month by Grammy Award winner John Legend at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Live video from the concert will be broadcast free over Microsoft's MSN service.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. People familiar with the deal say it extends for three years.

The agreement is part of a broader effort by Microsoft to attract more users and, in turn, advertisers to MSN. Over the past three years, Microsoft has invested heavily in new services designed to tap a rush of advertising that is fueling Google Inc. and other Web companies. Though MSN's efforts have increased the revenue Microsoft gets from online advertising, the company's ad revenue pales in comparison with rivals Google and Yahoo Inc.
