Growth: Category returns averaged 6.0% the past 10-years. These 499 funds averaged $1.4 billion in assets. The top performer was the $6.6 billion Janus Growth & Income (JAGIX) with a 10-year record averaging 11.4%.

Value: The large value category's 10-year average returns were 9.0%. There were 394 funds managing an average of $1.9 billion each. The $7.0 billion Excelsior Value & Restructuring (UMBIX) is the big winner with average 14.2% returns the past decade.

Midcap stock funds

Blend: The 10-year category returns averaged 10.9% for the 185 funds here. They managed an average of $950 million each. The $1.6 billion Meridian Value fund (MVALX) is tops with a whopping 17.4% average return for the past 10 years.

Growth: Category returns averaged 7.8% for the 302 funds in this category, with an average size of $744 million. Ten-year honors go to the $1.4 billion Baron Partners (BPTRX), with 14.7% average annual returns.

Value: Returns averaged 11.2% for the 120 funds in this category the past 10 years. They managed an average of $920 million assets each. The $4.2 billion Ariel Fund (ARGFX) is a winner with a 13.7% average annual return for the decade.

Value: Returns averaged 12.4% the past 10 years for this category. There were a total of 131 funds managing $588 million each. The $278 million Tamarack Micro Cap Value (TMVSX) averaged 14.5% annually over the decade.
