Northwest Hardens Line With Strikers

Kudos to Northwest management for pulling the backup plan together and executing well so far.

From Wall Street Journal:

Northwest Airlines, emboldened by its ability to sustain many of its flights with replacement workers five days into a nationwide strike, stepped up its confrontational rhetoric, saying it was prepared to operate indefinitely with its contingent work force of mechanics.

The No. 4 U.S. airline in terms of traffic spent $20 million in its second quarter alone to train hundreds of replacement workers, among other strike preparations. Since Saturday, it has been fixing its planes with a cadre of 1,200 replacement technicians aided by management employees and outside maintenance vendors.

The situation amounts to a bold test of resolve by the union and the air carrier, squaring off in the first major U.S. airline strike since Northwest pilots walked off the job in 1998. In previous labor clashes, strikes by mechanics have extremely hampered airlines' daily operations.
