Rankings Help You Pick The Right Broker

Take it with a grain of salt. At some level, transaction cost is no longer important.

From Wall Street Journal:

Great news for investors: Competition among discount brokers has been brutal, forcing firms to slash prices and lavish their sites with new features. Premium discounters, such as Fidelity Investments and E*Trade, have cut commissions so much that they're hardly distinguishable from those of the bare-bones online trading platforms. The no-frills sites, such as Harrisdirect and Muriel Siebert, are adding tools at such a clip that they're beginning to look a little like the premium sites. The bottom line is that you can have more for less: more features and customer service with less worry about price.

That's where SmartMoney's survey comes in. The magazine opened accounts at more than a dozen discount brokers -- premium and basic -- and made more than a hundred trades. We called and emailed customer service, rated mutual-fund availability, pored over statements and 1099 tax forms and graded Web sites on ease of use and efficiency.
