Avis, Budget Raise Rental-Car Fees

Yes, rental car becomes pretty expensive these days. I learned this from my recent trip in the New England.

From Wall Street Journal:

Cendant Car Rental Group says its brands, Avis Rent A Car System Inc. and Budget Rent A Car System Inc., have raised rates by $5 daily and $20 weekly for rentals after Sept. 10. Starting today, the company says it also plans to lower the age limit required to rent to 21 years old from 25 years old, and will charge $25 a day for drivers under 25 in most states.

The moves are part of efforts by car-rental companies to offset rising car costs and capitalize on above-average demand. Ford Motor Co.'s Hertz Corp. raised its prices by 5% for rentals starting in early July, an increase Cendant says it matched at the time. A Hertz spokeswoman declined to comment on the latest Cendant price increase. Enterprise Rent-A-Car Co. says it has no plans for an across-the-board rate increase, while a spokesman for Vanguard Car Rental USA Inc.'s National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands says the company is examining the Cendant moves and will likely match the increases largely because of the rising cost of cars.
