Shades of MCI: Unocal Battle May Be Lengthy

The CNOOC/Chevron competition for Unocal is destined to be a fierce business war to watch.

From Wall Street Journal:

Five raised bids. Forty-one news releases. Three very long months.

Thought the back-and-forth slog for control of MCI Inc. was wearying? Welcome to Unocal-land, described by one person involved as "MCI with politics." In tactics, financial details and personnel, this watershed deal -- with American oil giant Chevron Corp. competing against China National Offshore Oil Corp.'s Cnooc Ltd. unit -- recalls the contest for the telecommunications concern that began in the frosts of February and ended only as the weather warmed in May.

If there is any lesson from the MCI case, it is that Chevron probably will have to raise its bid, as Unocal Corp. will attempt to find every point of leverage for extracting more money. As fascinating as the political dimension of Cnooc's plans may be, merger campaigns are foremost questions of economics and spreadsheets, not C-SPAN.
