Supreme Court Retirement News Could Come After Term's End

No retirement for the year? William Rehnquist is 80 and John Paul Stevens is 85 now, so it's only a matter of time. President Bush will be able to make his pick in the remaining terms for sure.

From Wall Street Journal:

The Supreme Court ended its term Monday with no retirement announcements from any justices. A retirement could come later, however, as past retirement news has come in letters to the president or press releases.

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, 80 years old, said last fall he had thyroid cancer, triggering widespread speculation he would retire. The chief justice has continued to work at the court, but he missed several months of public sessions while he was undergoing cancer treatments. In recent months, his condition has appeared to improve.
