File Swappers Get Creative as Wheels of Justice Turn

I admit I casually use such peer-to-peer services too.

From New York Times:

BitTorrent works by reducing songs, videos and other files to crumbs that can be accumulated from various computers and reassembled into whole files - with the pieces simultaneously passed on to other users - all with a lighter drain on network bandwidth.

The genius of the application is a paradoxical network effect - and for content publishers, a terrifying one: the files passed on by the largest number of users also become the fastest to download.

The BitTorrent program, which works in conjunction with Web sites that post assorted links to available music, movies and software, is especially effective for downloading large video files that might take several hours to obtain over Grokster and Kazaa.
