Cell Phone Mergers Have Dark Side





Big rip-off is not a rare thing in the telecom industry.

From USA Today:

When he called Cingular's customer service department to complain, however, he got another rude surprise: He could stay with Cingular, but he'd have to pay a $175 disconnection fee to U.S. Cellular, which had just purchased the Lamar market.

Call it the dark side of the consolidation craze. Though telecom carriers are loath to talk about it, consumers who are stuck on the wrong side of a big merger can find themselves hurled into a no man's land of cell phone service.
