Even if the current economic cycle is nearing an end, the inclusion of some growth stocks in a portfolio could offer some protection. That's because two of the most popular value-oriented sectors, financial services stocks and energy, could be hit hard in a downturn. If the economy is approaching a recession, financials would be hurt by rising credit risks while energy prices are likely to slip in the face of falling demand.
