Comparing Airfares Gets Trickier

It is getting more difficult to perform apple-to-apple comparison of airfare.

From Wall Street Journal:

This month AMR Corp.'s American Airlines joined a few other carriers (mainly discounters) in quoting prices without including the add-on costs such as per-person federal taxes and airport surcharges. Instead, these extra costs -- which can account for as much as 20% of a typical $300 round-trip domestic fare -- are tacked on later in the ticket-buying process.

...

Today, those charges can make a big difference in ticket prices. Airline passengers pay the federal government $3.20 for every flight, called a "segment fee." Passengers also pay a federal security fee of $2.50 for every flight, up to $10 for a round-trip. And airports charge per-passenger fees of up to $4.50 per boarding to pay for terminals and runways.
