Wheat Pennies & Morgan Dollars
I spent the past weekend in the Blue Ridge Mountains. That's where my bride-to-be was born and raised. Unfortunately, the main purpose of this visit was to start working on cleaning up the house she grew up in -- she and her sister will be selling it later this year. I wasn't much help going through old letters and paperwork, but there was something we came across that I could help with.
Buried in the back of her closet, we found a metal container full of change. Since I wasn't helping with anything else, I told her that I would separate and count the change. After an hour of counting, we had almost $200 in change.
However, I noticed a lot of the pennies were wheat pennies from the 1930's. We wondered if the wheat pennies were worth more than a cent, and figured if they were that we would be in good shape.
She also had some old half-dollar and dollar coins. Upon further research, these are the ones that could be valuable. We found 6 Morgan Dollar coins from the 1880's and several others from the 1920's. My initial research indicates these could be worth up to $20 each - not too bad. They are all 90% silver.
We're going to buy coin holders online and save these for years to come, not a bad find and something that helped lighten the day.
