Financial Conversation for Newlyweds

We're 86 days away from the wedding. Here's a conversation that took place over e-mail today between me and the bride-to-be.

Me: Hey Honey! Hope you're having a good day. Check out this article -- I know we're on the right track, but thought it might spark some ideas for us.

Her: Thanks honey! Can't we just have a "you make it, I spend it" policy?

Here's a link to the article I sent.

Jennifer Openshaw, of CBS Marketwatch, published this inspiring article that I hope will generate conversation. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the article.

  • "Plan your strategy - This involves deciding which of you will manage the finances. Some couples divide this by having one spouse pay monthly bills, and the other spouse focuses on longer-term decisions such as investments, employer benefits elections, insurance, etc."

  • Save, save, save - Get in the habit of saving money right away. Begin with saving 10% of your income, and target an increase of half of each raise you get. You may think it is hard to save early in a marriage, but just wait -- it only gets harder. "
