Take your vacation days!

Do you take all of your paid vacation days throughout the course of a year? Surprisingly, most Americans let their vacation days on the table. Why do we do that? And what are we missing out on by doing so?

I am granted 15 days of vacation based on my length of time with my current employer (4 years). In addition, I carried over 20 days from last year - giving me a grand total of 35 paid days off. We're almost 1/2 way through the year and I have taken only 2.5 days of vacation. Even though I'm taking time for my honeymoon in September, there's no way I'll come close to using the 32.5 vacation days that I have left.

MarketWatch posted this article which gives a ton of statistics around American vacation tendencies, and discusses these 3 reasons why we tend to save our vacation days.

  • Machismo - tough people do not need a vacation

  • Too busy for a vacation

  • Fear that being away from the office will lead to unemployment
  • I fall into the last category. I really am afraid that if I take too much time away from the office, then I may be the next to go home for good.

What does our common sense tell us to do with our vacation time?

  • Take a vacation - get away and go somewhere fun

  • Catch up on errands & cut the grass - you can still check e-mail from home, right?

  • Work on a home-based business & get paid twice

  • Catch up on sleep
  • Any other ideas?

I earn 14 hours/month annual leave. In addition, I work for a large state edu system so I get the week after Christmas plus the usual federal holiday off. We can also carry over up to 360 hours per year, which I do. I consider it my "moving expenses" for when I finally vacate this joint. I figure I get plenty of vacation with all of the holidays and indeed have to make sure I use a week or 2 additionally so I don't lose any of my accrued time.

I take all my vacation days every year even tho' I could save them. Why? It's a job benefit that improves the quality of my life. Plus, the dollar value of a vacation day earned but not taken this year cannot really be considered an investment. I will be repaid for that day in deflated dollars. I return energized, get caught up quickly, and my higher productivity is noticed!
