Clicking for Carats
Would you buy an engagement ring online? A recent article from CBS MarketWatch gives the pros and cons of clicking for carats.
I purchased the engagement ring for my bride-to-be from a traditional jeweler in the mall. I always said that I would never buy an engagement ring at the mall. However, I took her to "look" at rings on Valentine's night. After looking, I sent her down the mall with money for a manicure and I closed the deal on a 1.01 carat emerald cut diamond. Just like the sales profession that I'm in -- jewelers have quotas to meet and are anxious to hit them around 9pm on Valentine's night.
I have a close friend that purchased the ring for his wife from bluenile.com and has been extremely happy. Whereas I purchased the ring after only looking at one store, he shopped around for months to find the best deal. As usual, shopping online gives the ability to comparison shop for price.
CBS MarketWatch recently ran this article that discusses other advantages, and a few disadvantages of purchasing an engagement ring online.

MBNA offers 10% off jewelry on blue nile, and although they do not offer the discount on the diamond, I intend to buy my ring from that sight. The selection is great, and although the diamonds are a bit expensive, they will beat almost any bricks and mortar store price. The stores like to offer you insurance and cleaning, but I fully intend to buy the ring online. The selection is paramount, and the ease of the purchase makes it well worth it.
