What's the Deal? - Neat Receipts

According to their site, Neat Receipts is "a portable scanner and software system that is guaranteed to dramatically reduce your paper clutter and simplify your business paperwork." I read about it in one of my wife's organization magazines. Sounded great, but too good to be true?

Price: I bought the scanner and software used on Ebay because the $229.99 on their site was a little rich for me. I ended up paying just over $100 with shipping. As of this writing there are none being offered on Ebay and the lowest price may be $205+ from tigerdirect.com.

Does it really work? I've had mixed results, but some of them stellar, with the scanner technology that figures out the date, price, amount, and vendor from your receipt. It does seem to remember similar receipts though quite well. One example is once I scanned a few NJ Transit ticket receipts it always gets all the information right. That's pretty impressive. It's less accurate with the pale yellow receipts, but almost always gets at least the date right. The software is good. Takes awhile to get used to it but overall I am happy with the way it saves the receipts (proprietary format). You can export to PDF and a few other formats for expense reports and such. All in all I'm pretty happy with this.

Pros: So much less paper and clutter. You'll know I value this because of this post. If you are the type of person (OCD) who saves all receipts then this is a great product for you.

Cons: Sometimes a little clunky and the receipts don't feed through well without help, but this is usually when they are bent. The software hangs up once in awhile but only a few times and I've had it for about 5 months now.

Worth it? Yes, I think so. I give it an A- for total satisfaction. This is a good product that delivers. I recommend it.mortgage calculator
