Eminent Domain Even Works on Justices!

This is brilliant! Days after the Supreme Court's ruling allowing governments to exercise the power of eminent domain to seize property for economic benefit for the state, it was reported in a press release that Logan Darrow Clements, a businessman in New Hampshire, will attempt to turn Supreme Court Justice David Souter's, home into a hotel, museum, and restaurant! Justice Souter was one of the five who voted in favor of the City of New London.

If you enjoy irony, and I do, you'll get a huge kick out of reading the press release, here are from highlights:

  • The hotel will be named: "The Lost Liberty Hotel"

  • The restaurant inside will be named: "Just Desserts Caf"

  • The museum will be "featuring a permanent exhibit on the loss of freedom in America."

  • Replacing a Bible in each room, "each guest will receive a free copy of Ayn Rand's novel 'Atlas Shrugged.'"

And, as for the reason it needs to be here?

Clements indicated that the hotel must be built on this particular piece of land because it is a unique site being the home of someone largely responsible for destroying property rights for all Americans.

The scary part is that it might work because ... "The Towne of Weare has five people on the Board of Selectmen. If three of them vote to use the power of eminent domain to take this land from Mr. Souter we can begin our hotel development."

Ha! This is wonderful! Oh, and the best quote I've read so far regarding this issue is by Peenie Wallie: "The notorious supreme court ruling handed down this week in Kelo vs. New London makes every man a serf instead of a citizen." That's a pretty good line. The picture on the page is pretty awesome too. :)

Kudos to Outside The Beltway, where I read this story first.
